36 years of teaching

years of teaching from K-4th grade

Colleen Cunningham is a true veteran. She has taught for almost 40 years, from kindergarten to 4th grade. Colleen started her elementary education at Western Oregon University where she got her bachelor’s degree.  She got her first job straight out of college, at Dayton elementary school. She was the bilingual 3rd grade teacher for 3 years. After she quit that job she got a job in Salem elementary school for 14 years where she was the bilingual teacher for the 1st, 2-3rd grade. After that she got her last job as a full time job at Irrigon elementary school as the ELD (English Language Development) for grades K-4 for 15 years.

Colleen has taught as a full teacher for 32 years, after that she became a substitute teacher which is what she does today. During this time she taught a lot of grades. She said there was never a class she didn’t like or favorite as they are all great ages it depends more on what you are in to. She preferred 3rd grade though because they are at the age where they can understand more and like to learn, but are also small enough they still like to give you hugs. She didn’t always want to be a teacher though, when she was at college she wanted to do something in Spanish. One of her teachers suggested she take teaching classes. She said her first few years as a teacher was the hardest, it takes so much focus that by the end of the day you want to rip your hair out.
