WHATS WRONG WITH THE EDUCATION SYSTEM?

What is wrong with the education system? This is a question that has many people wondering, is there something wrong? Or are people just not being reasonable. Most people do not know that there really are problems in the schooling system, or they don’t fully understand what the problems are or how that affects the students.

Diogenes said, “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.”  This is true, but today schools focus more on the testing then the students learning and understanding the content. In years past schools focused on the testing, but they also focused on the student’s creativity as well. They had ways the kids could express themselves whether through art or something else. Today the government raises the testing bar so high and with so much content, it is suffocating the creativity and innovation in students. Teachers are not educating students anymore, they are just teaching them to pass a test. The government does not care if a student truly understands what they are learning; they care about the national average test scores and that they are high enough.

The government cares so much about public image and not offending anybody, that they ban books and authors from schools. The books and authors they ban are Classics and helped make America into what it is today. People think that books are just books, but they are much more than that. This is often forgotten though. Catcher in the Rye was banned because it says the “F” word; To Kill a Mocking Bird has been banned for the use of the “N” word. Maya Angelou, who is the most banned author in America, is banned because we are not allowed to talk about rape in school.

These are just two of the many problems in the education system. These are big problems that need to be fixed somehow. If the state testing is not fixed then kids will not fully know how to do things for college or their job. It is a requirement that you pass the tests to graduate so if the government raises it too much then kids might not be able to graduate from high school. Most students in my high school only know of 1-3 of the classic books.  Most have never read more than two classics, this is sad because these classic books helped shape America and the world into what it is today. The only the reason they are banned is because they say a bad word or is seen at pornographic (The Scarlet Letter). But these books are not just classics they tell and give the reader a glimpse into the era it was written.
