Winter/ Christmas

Brrr! winter is in the air! Winter is my favorite holiday, it starts to get colder, and snow starts to fall, holidays, HOT CHOCOLATE! There are many things you can incorporate winter into a thematic unit lesson plan.  I remember when I was in elementary school one of the main things we focused on was snow/ice, and blizzards.

Art

This is one of the easyiest ways to bring winter into the classroom; some of the most popular things are making snowmen or snowflakes. It would be cool to make a bulletin board and have kids make some snow man but make the bottom look like its melting then the bulletin board could say "Why snowmen shouldn't drink hot chocolate!"

math

Math might be a little less obvious, but there are still many things you can do. You can have the kids; count/subtract different winter themed things (Christmas trees, snow man. Etc.) There will always be the basic winter themed math worksheets as well.

Science

This subject with a winter theme is a great way to introduce kids the topic of hibernation and migration. They have many books that talk about it would be great for when the kids have story time. You can also talk about winter animal like polar bears, and penguins.

Writing/Spelling/Literacy

There are many ways to incorporate winter into this subject. First off you can have them read winter books. They can have winter themed vocab words. The way I like best is you give a picture of something winter themed, and then you have the kids write you a story of what’s happening. This is great way to help there literacy and their creativity.
