Book Sorting

Along with doing my independent study on Elementary Education I am also a T.A at the Elementary school library. I am always with kids whether through helping them find books they like and that they can understand or just checking out books,  I can tell which books are good for the kids by the grade there in. My librarian Mr. V had gotten some boxes of books donated to the library. He asked me to sort them out since he did not have the time. There were a lot of books that had to be sorted; it took me about 2 weeks to finish it. I looked at many things to determine the grade it was best suited for; vocabulary, letter size, content, among others. I used a website to help me sort them as some books were very tricky to sort.

Grade K-1

When kids are in the K-1 grade range they are just learning to read. So there books won’t have a whole lot on it and will have the minimum vocab. the books might also be more educated than others. EX. (bigger and smaller. By. Robert, Froman.)

Grade 2-4

When kids are in the 2-4 grade range they can read simple sentences and paragraphs. The vocab that is in the books is more complex and more sophisticated

Grade 5-6

When kids are in the 5-6 grade range, they’re reading whole books. And can comprehend what they are reading. Also at this age they start (if not earlier) transitioning for learning to read to reading to learn.

Middle school

When kids are in middle school, they are reading to learn fully. The English classes they have teach them more to read for longer periods of time and writing papers.
